ICEP Internships

Internship opportunities are available on an ongoing basis.

We offer internships to American students and international students living in the United States.

We also offer internships to students from areas of the world where we seek to strengthen our network and recruitment efforts. Because ICEP internships last a minimum of six months, and a maximum of 12 months, participants in the Work Travel Programs (or Internship Trainee Program) are ineligible for this opportunity.

Short-term unpaid Internships for One Month - May and June 2006

Interns will help out with orientation conferences in New York City for international participants on the summer program. Interns will also assist with office work, logistics, coordinating arrival and departure of participants, and planning sightseeing trips around New York City.

Free dormitory-style accommodation in our youth hostel ( International Student Center) in Manhattan; unlimited metrocard for the subway and buses in NYC; lunch on the days you work.

ICEP Program Coordinator

International education organization is seeking a highly organized and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Coordinator of the International Counselor Exchange Program, a summer exchange program entering its 53 rd year. ICEP places several hundred young people from around the world to serve as international counselors in children's camps in the USA. Our goal is to create opportunities for interaction between international counselors, American children, and American camp staff, with the ultimate aim of nurturing friendships and a better understanding between peoples from different cultures.

Working with the Executive Director, the ICEP Program Coordinator will create a year’s operational plan comprising recruitment and placement strategies of international counselors at summer camps in the USA. This includes coordinating administrative calendar of events that facilitate the partnerships, both international and domestic.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all administrative and operational functions of the program, including distribution of program information materials, correspondence, detailed record keeping…year round
  • Serve as the primary contact for and maintain communication with all ICEP constituents: international representatives, prospective international applicants, selected participants, camp directors in the US, and program alumni
  • Interview and select international applicants for summer program participation
  • Coordinate international counselor placements at summer camps around the United States
  • Plan, organize and attend ACA sponsored regional conferences when necessary
  • Organize and lead orientation sessions for international counselors arriving in New York before their departure for camp
  • Summer crisis management; provide crisis counseling and conflict resolution for camps and international staff; 24 hour pager duty during the summer
  • Plan and conduct site visits at participating camps during summer months (domestic travel during July and August)
  • Some international travel possible after first year in the position


Required Skills and Experience:

  • College degree/BA
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong administrative planning and management skills
  • Must be a multi-tasker with the ability to work effectively and sensitively in a highly multicultural environment, besides being able to work independently.
  • Prior summer camp staff experience in the US required; experience in a camp senior staff or administrative position preferred
  • experience living or studying abroad
  • Strong work-ethic, good technology fluency [familiarity with MS Office] and confident in their work.
  • Background and/or interest in education, youth, and multi-cultural community building are critical.
  • driver’s license and clean driving record
  • ability to work evenings and weekends from May to September



$30,000/year, 2/3 medical and dental insurance after six months of employment,
2 weeks paid vacation during first two years


Additional Qualifications:

Persons with skills in:

  • singing and playing the piano or guitar; or, interest and skills in the performing arts or fine art are attractive candidates for the ICEP Program Coordinator's position.
